Aldersgate recognizes the pivotal role grandparents play in the lives of children. This series is meant to provide education and resources that will assist grandparents in navigating the role of caregiver to children and adolescents.

This six-part series is offered virtually so you can participate from home, vacation, or wherever you will be this summer.

Session 1: Social Media Savvy

June 11, 2024 5:00 - 6:30 p.m.

What are they doing online?

Join us and learn about social media trends. Find out which apps your grandchildren are using (TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.) and how they can be both helpful and harmful. Learn how to ask the hard questions about your grandchildren’s social media usage to help you both navigate the ever evolving technological landscape.

Session 2: Is that Your Grandchild?!

Caring for grandchildren who don’t look like you

If you’ve been asked this question before, you may have a grandchild whose race, culture or ethnicity differs from your own. This session is for any grandparent who wants to learn how to talk about race and culture with their grandchildren. What can you say? What ways will their identities both differ and intersect with your own? Learn how to support them as they navigate their own identity development.

Session 3: Don’t Say That!

June 25, 2024 5:00 - 6:30 p.m.

Sexuality/Gender Identity and Pronouns

If you have ever felt unsure about how to properly refer to your grandchild or their friends, this is the session for you. We will discuss the difference between gender and sexuality. We will also talk about the importance of the proper use of pronouns. Come with a willingness to learn and a desire to connect with your grandchild.

Session 4: Mental Health 101

July 9, 2024 5:00 - 6:30 p.m.

What is mental health and what does it mean to you and your grandchild? What is the impact of mental health on their education and overall well-being? What are the signs that your grandchild is struggling and what can you do to help?

Session 5: Drug and Alcohol Awareness

July 16, 2024 5:00 - 6:30 p.m.

How do you know if your grandchild has tried or is actively using drugs or alcohol? Is it normal for kids and teens to experiment with substance use? What are the signs that they are using? When should you be concerned? Learn about the most prevalent drugs used today, how to identify potential usage and what to do if you have concerns.

Session 6: Suicide - Changing the Dialogue from Fear to Prevention

July 23, 2024 5:00 - 6:30 p.m.

You may be afraid to even say the word, let alone ask if your grandchild has thought about suicide. This session will provide education about how to talk about suicide with your grandchildren. What are the signs your grandchild is struggling? What do you say and when do you say it? How can you get them help? Come gain knowledge and leave feeling empowered to support your grandchildren.
